Remembering a dear friend and colleague

Our hearts are heavy with the news that Susan Fulford, a dear and valued member of the extended Newport family passed away on Thursday April 22nd. Susan died after a nine-month struggle with her second bout of cancer (2011), which she fought courageously and quietly.

As an independent consultant and professional in-residence at Newport, Susan worked alongside our team to provide collaborative and independent advisory services to business families.

“For over a decade, Susan had been a wonderful friend of the firm. She was a passionate believer in the holistic wealth planning work that she was doing and that we were doing, and it was that mutual belief that brought us together for the betterment of our clients,” said Newport President & CEO Douglas Brown.

We remember Susan as a bright light in our world – eminently skilled in her vocation, generous in sharing her knowledge with us and our clients, irrepressibly cheerful, and passionate in her mission to help families become better stewards of their wealth.

Susan came by her work honestly. Hailing from a family business background, her career path to advising successful business and multi-generational families represented the perfect culmination of personal and professional experience.

With a law degree from Osgoode Hall, she began her career as a civil litigator. Soon, however, she would find there was no escaping the call to business that was clearly in her DNA. She went on to hold several roles that leveraged her deep understanding of relationship dynamics. In 2000, she moved to Europe to accept a senior position with a global consulting firm where she liaised between the country partners and C-suite executives of Europe’s leading financial institutions to foster meaningful partner and client relationships.

In 2003, she returned to Canada to assist the shareholders of a private family business with their strategy and exploring possible divesture options. After successfully completing the engagement, she went on to hold senior private wealth positions with two of Canada’s largest financial institutions where she used her deep experience in legal, global and wealth management issues to counsel family enterprises and ultra-high-net-worth clients. In 2015, she founded Dynamic Legacy Inc. and began formally working with Newport in 2019 after having been a friend of the firm for over a decade.

“Susan brought valuable talents and insights to our clients – challenging them when needed and inspiring them to move; always eager to help. She will be missed,” said Chief Wealth Management Officer, David Lloyd.

We will miss Susan greatly. We are holding her son, Harrison and her family in our hearts as they grieve this terrible loss.

As a tribute to Susan and in accordance with her family’s wishes, we have made a donation to Princess Margaret Lymphoma Bone and Brain Research.
