Richard Colton CFA®, CIM®
Portfolio Manager
While Richard Colton spent plenty of time at his family’s auto repair business as a kid, he never mastered the finer points of auto mechanics. Instead, while his brother went on to be the family’s 3rd generation business owner, Richard took a different path, and followed his mother’s footsteps into a career in finance. But even though he didn’t join the family business, the values he learned there – acting with integrity, trustworthiness, and hard work – remained with him.
“Growing up in the small community of Flesherton, I saw from a very young age that the reputation you established and being accountable to your clients mattered,” says Richard. “Our shared focus on maintaining the highest standards is what was immediately appealing about Newport Private Wealth. The firm’s investment alignment and focus on a client-first ethos fit perfectly with my own values.”
Always someone who enjoys taking on challenging tasks both professionally and personally, Richard opted to pursue the CFA designation early in his career because of its notorious difficulty and widely regarded status as the highest level of professionalism in the industry. Richard’s previous experience saw him in roles at CIBC, HSBC and Manulife Financial; he most recently served as a Portfolio Manager and Senior Manager for a family-run asset management firm in Kingston. Mastering the complexities of wealth management and serving clients with dedication has been a very rewarding journey thus far.
That same love of challenge has led Richard to take on everything from home renovations to hockey and golf. Inspired by The Queen’s Gambit, filmed in part at his old alma mater, St. Andrew’s College, he’s immersed himself in chess, and is on a quest to have the perfect lawn. Richard and his wife live in Kingston with their two children.
Richard earned his Honours B.A in Economics from Queen’s University where he was also a four-year member of the University Golf Team. Richard holds both the CFA and CIM® designations and is an Associate Member of the Institute of Advanced Financial Planners, where he is a candidate for the RFP designation.
