Andrew G. Thomson MBA, CFA®
Managing Director & Portfolio Manager
Whether he is analyzing investments for his clients or mapping out his career path, Andrew is always thorough in his considerations.
His decision to join Newport Private Wealth was born out of years spent appraising the business models and results of hundreds of global asset managers and investment counselors as a Research Analyst with the Financial Institutions practice of Deloitte & Touche (now Deloitte).
Andrew’s analytical skills and strategic approach to investment management also developed from years of first-hand experience. Following his role with Deloitte, Andrew joined Mulvihill Capital Management where he advanced through the roles of Fixed Income Trader, Equity Analyst, and finally Portfolio Manager working with Mulvihill’s institutional and private client families. During this time, Andrew earned an MBA from The Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario.
In 2008, Andrew joined Newport, attracted by the firm’s ‘open architecture’ approach of hiring independent money managers with specialized expertise. “The industry norm is to use in-house management, but this approach can have its drawbacks as it’s impossible for a single team to consistently excel in every asset class,” he says. “Newport is resolutely objective in sourcing external expertise and that gives me a lot of confidence.”
Andrew works closely with client families from both Ontario and Western Canada. When he’s not working, Andrew enjoys golfing, skiing, exercising, and spending time with his wife and two children.
