Michael Vanderburgh MBA, CFA®, CFP®
Managing Director & Portfolio Manager
At the age of 13, inspired by a visit to the trading floor of the Toronto Stock Exchange with his financial executive grandfather, Mike Vanderburgh knew he wanted to work in the investment industry.
With an MBA from the University of Toronto, Mike joined Manulife as an analyst, then Burns Fry (now Nesbitt Burns) as an investment executive. In 1993, he became Director of Investment Services for Wittington Investments, the family office of the Weston family, where he was responsible for overseeing investments and supervising external money managers, as well as servicing family members. At Wittington, Mike experienced the value of diversification through alternative asset classes and specialized, external money managers. In his view, “all investors should have access to these asset classes because that’s what’s right for people.”
In 1996, Mike moved to Jones Heward (now BMO Harris Private Bank) where he had personal responsibility for $2 billion of assets under management.
A Certified Financial Planner, Mike moved to Newport Private Wealth in 2006, attracted by the firm’s truly diversified investment approach and holistic, client-centric planning. “The investment path you pursue should be determined by the personal goals in your financial plan and you should never take on more risk than you need to achieve your goals,” he says.
Providing safety is something Mike does away from the office as well, as a member of the Canadian Ski Patrol and a crew chief for World Cup Alpine Skiing.
