Mark recalls money being a constant topic of conversation around the dinner table when he and his parents first arrived to Canada as new immigrants. While he didn’t fully understand at the time that his parents were making do with very little, it gave root to the idea that financial stability was a major contributor to a family’s well-being.

Mark started his career in a self-directed brokerage call centre for one of the big banks, where his role was to help with trade execution and navigating the platform. “I would see clients make poor decisions, like investing all the funds in their RRSP into one penny stock but I was unable to provide advice due to the restrictions of the channel,” says Mark. “That’s what motivated me to pursue an advisory role.”

He continued his progress in the industry, most notably with Scotia Wealth Management and RBC Dominion Securities. Prior to joining Newport, Mark worked at a prominent family office in Toronto, where he learned the benefits of a financial-planning first mentality. “Even the best investment plan won’t plug the gaps of poor financial discipline,” Mark says.

Being a private client portfolio manager is perfectly suited to Mark’s love of change. “At times you have to be a detail-oriented, number-crunching analyst, and at other times it is all about the soft skills like communicating, presenting and negotiating,” he says. Mark is a CFA® charterholder and a Certificated Financial Planner. He graduated from York University with a B.A. (Honours) degree.

Mark and his wife Filicia are based in Pickering, Ontario. In his spare time, Mark volunteers as a program facilitator with the Centre for Leadership and Innovation, a youth leadership and public speaking program for children mainly from the Sri Lankan community. Helping the next generation develop the skills for success in the workplace is something Mark is very passionate about. Both Mark and his wife are skilled home chefs, always trying to outdo each other in the kitchen. When he’s not in the kitchen, Mark can be found reading, a favourite pastime.
